ManOnTheRoad.org is an outreach of Man On The Road, headquartered in Madison, Tennessee. Tom Buford, founder of Man On The Road, feels a deep concern for men who travel for a living or are away from home for extended periods, whether they be truck drivers, bus drivers, entertainers, salesmen, military personnel or college students. He has been a truck driver. For years he was a bus driver, first for Trailways, then for entertainers that ranged from Twisted Sister to music legend Johnny Cash.
Tom knows the dangers that lie in wait for men who don't guard their hearts and minds. Tom’s own world became a place where truth and fantasy collide — a place where the heaven of luxury hotels, limousines, and prestige met the hell of loneliness, heartache, and spiritual death that lurks along the path for men who work on the road in any occupation. Dreams gave way to nightmares as temptations of every sort — more than he ever imagined — were paraded within his grasp. Sermons he'd heard as a child resounded in his ears as he found himself spiraling downward into pornography addiction, sexual perversion, gambling, alcohol, more — addictions that eventually demanded the ultimate ransom.
Life, he was sure, was over. His marriage was going down the drain. But if Tom had spent most of his early years in church, he had yet to meet the Author of life, the meaning of God’s grace and mercy, and the importance of forgiveness. In 1991, the Lord he had turned his back on decided it was time for Tom to come home. A powerful event took place in his life that caused all literal hell to break loose in an all out battle against the demonic forces that had controlled him. He was freed at last from his addictions.
Man On The Road is the fruit of Tom's experience as he found his way back home. Tom is the author of Riding a Dead Horse: Carousel to Hell, the story of God's miraculous redemptive work in his life, and Fires of Darkness, the novel.
Why does Man On The Road do what it does?
The short and simple answer? Because we care. We care about men who spend the majority of their time away from their families. We care about their families. We know first-hand what life on the road can do to a family when the husband goes astray - when he loses sight of the prize he has at home.
Life on the road can be whatever we make it - an honorable source of income to support the family, or a catalyst for destructive thinking and behavior that destroys the family. If we can help just one man return to being the husband and father he was created to be, this entire effort will have been worth it.
Man On The Road reaches out to pornography addicts and the people who love them and is supported entirely by donations. Man On The Road is a non-profit corporation in the state of Tennessee and a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization under the rules and regulations of the Internal Revenue Service in the United States.
